In average conditions, tires are often rated for 50,000 miles. Normal use should cause your treads, which is the rubber part of the tire that makes contact with the road, wear down over time. The tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. 6/32 of tread depth is considered good. After you reach 4/32 of an inch it is time to think about fresh tires, and at 2/32 your tires are no longer roadworthy and must be changed immediately.  To get the longest life span on your tires, Dave recommends a tire rotation every 3-5000 miles (or with every oil change), maintain proper alignment, and check your tire pressure frequently.
